Cultural context

Mortar-and-pestle sets are among the oldest utilitarian products of the Tabaka stone trade. Soapstone's slight softness makes it easy to hollow yet durable under daily grinding; the stone darkens and polishes with use.

In Gusii homes, small mortars were used for snuff tobacco and for pounding herbs and medicines — work traditionally associated with senior members of the household. Today the same forms are carved for both local kitchens and the tourist market.
