Cultural context

In traditional Gusii society, boys underwent initiation — including circumcision — in their early teens, followed by a period of seclusion, instruction in adult responsibilities, and a celebratory emergence marked with new attire and ornament. Girls' initiation historically also involved circumcision; this practice is now rejected by the community and Kenyan law, and the museum documents it as history, not endorsement.

The historical photograph shows a woman in the ornaments such celebrations made visible: beadwork, earrings and dress that announced status. Initiation organised people into named age-sets (eminyange/ritika) whose members advanced through life stages together — a social memory many elders still hold.
