Students of the Adventist school, c. 1910s
The first generation of Kisii children to sit in mission classrooms.

Seventh-day Adventist missionaries established work in the Kisii highlands from 1912, and mission schools followed. This colonial-era photograph shows Kisii students at the Adventist school — probably among the first children in the district to hold books.
Within two generations the community that met those first teachers would be producing a remarkable share of Kenya's own teachers and civil servants.
